I am writing the pirate!AU for Verbotene Liebe. In case you've never heard of Verbotene Liebe flee while you still can it's a German daytime soap that has recently introduced a gay couple. I got hooked on it due to this clip on Youtube of boykissing, and the experienced missing time due not to aliens but to spending a whole afternoon watching the rest.

The pirate!AU is due to Acari's wonderful manip of Christian as a pirate. The story is writing itself, I tell you! It wants to be written. And along the way it's incorporating every possible pirate story cliche ever, on top of the fact that the canon is a soap opera, with all that means for plot, character development, and dialogue.

So far, there is Olivia as Pirate Queen with Olli as her second in command of the No Limits pirate ship, which sails out of Massera, a (made up) pirate community (think Tortuga) on the North African coast of the Mediterranean, ruled over by Zulfiqar (played by Robert Vaughn in his younger days, think Napoleon Solo), who combines every possible Hollywood cliche about sultans and harems and fierce looking guards with crossed swords. He also has a wicked looking scar running down one cheek.

I am using PotC as research material for historical accuracy, with occasionally Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk thrown in for good measure.

So far, Olivia is Pirate Queen, Christian has been rescued from being a galley slave, and Olli has been flogged. Also, there is rum. It is scary how much this thing wants to be written and how capable it seems I am of writing fic based on a daytime soap.

As announced, I'm writing a story that takes into account most of what happened up to HBP and then goes AU. It starts when Harry is 23. Voldemort has finally been defeated after years of war. A lot has happened in the interim. The story deals with the first meeting of Harry and Snape since the night Snape killed Dumbledore, and then with their slowly developing relationship, and also with cleaning up the post-war mess, and rebuilding society. It is slowly working up to Snape/Harry slash, and there probably will also be other pairings. It will eventually be rated R or NC-17, though I may be some time getting there. For now I'd say PG-13 for general nastiness of about the same level as the books.

Anyway, I've decided to post it here as I finish bits of it, otherwise I will keep brooding over every scene and never get on to writing the next bit. After it's finished I will go through it thoroughly and fine tune things. I would really appreciate any and all input in aid of making this the best story it can be!

Harry/Snape Postwar AU, Part One )

The more I tinker with this scene, the more I am convinced that it will only truly be finished to my satisfaction once the rest of the story is finished. What I'm wanting to do is to get every issue that Harry and Snape have with each other on the table, have it be visible between them. Some issues are no longer issues; Harry has long since outgrown his hatred of Snape because Snape was mean to him in class, and he has an adult's understanding of shades of grey. However, some things are not so easily swept under the table, despite the fact that Harry knows Snape was almost certainly on their side all the way through.

This is one of THE most important scenes in the whole story, and I have been brooding over it for weeks trying to get it right, and it's still not there yet. It is, however, for the moment good enough as a base. The next few scenes should be much easier to write.

Queries:
- Snape adressess Harry as 'Lord Potter', but thinks of him as Potter. Should I change this to having Snape also think of him as 'Lord Potter'? I will go with what my readers prefer on this, as I can think of arguments for both and can't decide.
- This chapter is from Snape's POV. Am I giving Harry enough attention, fleshing him out enough? The next few chapters will explain some of what is going on and why Harry is 'Lord Potter' etc, but for this chapter is there enough sense of Harry's presence?

Just a few random notes:
- In this AU, Sirius/Remus is canon. Remus/Tonks never happened.
- I loathed George Harris as Kingsley Shacklebolt in the fifth movie. It may have been the outfit. Anyway, for the purposes of this story, he is played by Conrad Coates, who plays Morgan on The Dresden Files.
- I am completely discounting the book 7 Snape/Lily stuff.

Subject: Writing Wimsey
Security: Public

So, the Peter/Bunter PWP set in Paris is not so much a PWP anymore. It is, however, still set in Paris, which I suppose is something. Paul Delgardie insisted on being in it yesterday, however, so now we have a scene with him giving Peter some Uncle-y advice. And now Darius wants to be in it. Yes, that Darius, from Highlander. He feels that Bunter could do with some advice, and as he's walking along the Seine near Notre Dame anyway he might as well come in for tea, and possibly chess. At this rate Peter and Bunter are never going to end up in bed together! Ugh!

It is mostly plotted out, and a good deal of it is written, though I do need to go over it and try to make it more 'Wimseyish' qua word use and flights of fancy. So again, if anybody has any words they would like Wimsey to use, or piffle about anything (though related to Paris would be great), please do share!

Subject: Gaudy Night

Have just finished reading Gaudy Night. I wish I could unread it; just sort of scrub out my brain and remove all traces. In fairness, the first half was quite good, contained some brilliant one-liners and interesting perspective on Peter and his relationship with Harriet. But about halfway through Peter and Harriet were replaced by pod-persons. There is no other explanation. I found Peter to be extremely tiresome. A tiresome old bore, to put it plainly. His suddenly being able to do everything perfectly, including writing poetry and detective novels, made me lose interest. Harriet became extremely tiresome halfway through as well, not knowing her own mind and basically wilting in Peter's presence so that I can't imagine what he would see in her, or she in him, him having become this person who is so much her superior in every regard. I mean, the whole point was that they were equals, was it not, and now suddenly not only is he the perfect detective, but the perfect writer of poetry and detective novels.

I love the LPW books, and though I tend to prefer the early ones over the ones featuring Harriet Vane, I had no objection to her. But now, just, OMG, the horror! I completely lost interest in them about 3/4 of the way through the book, and would have stopped reading only it was rather like a train wreck. I feel as if Sayers has abandoned the true essence of her characters, what makes each interesting and unique, just to bring them together in a clumsy and contrived way.

Subject: Request for obscure words and flights of fancy, all in aid of fic
Security: Public

I am writing Peter/Bunter slash in earnest. It is, in several ways, deeply scary. I have no idea what I'm doing! The characters live in such a very different world from my own, one I love to visit, but have idea how to write. Anyway, I'm writing the plotbunny set in Paris, that was supposed to be a PWP but is stubbornly turning into something else. And I've come up with a 'trick' that I'm worried everyone will think is silly, because I'm not sure I don't think it's silly myself. And I want to throw in the typically Wimsey flights of fancy and use of obscure words, only, um, somewhat lacking on inspiration for that, as the things I know in that category are not things he would know. So, please, if you have any wonderfully obscure words that Wimsey would use, please do share!

Subject: Questions in the pursuance of Charlie/Tony slash...
Security: Public

I am quite determined to write Hotel Babylon Charlie/Tony slash. However, I need some more information from anyone who's British and has watched the show (though everyone is more than welcome to answer question three).

I feel there are all sorts of things with accent and class in this show that are going right over my head, so please, the more explanation the better. I also have no idea under what sort of social circumstances Tony and Charlie would have grown up, which I feel is implied in the show only I'm not picking it up owing to not being British.

1) What is Tony's background? I mean, I know he has a wife and kids, but do we know anything else about his past? And what is his accent, and what does that tell us about him?

2) On Charlie, do we know why he went to prison? I know it was for 12 months. Do we know where? What are English prisons like, I mean, is there the same 'rape culture' that exists in US prisons? And what accent does he have, and what are its implications?

3) What is the slashiest Charlie/Tony moment, in your opinion? I might be going with the punch in episode 16, but then, I haven't seen all the episodes.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Subject: Why is there no Hotel Babylon slash?

Just finished watching a rerun of Hotel Babylon, the 6th episode of Season 2. OMG I want to read Charlie/Tony h/c fic! WHY is there no slash on the internet for this pairing? Charlie would have issues with having been in prison, and Tony would have issues due to his background, but the friendship would see them through. I am babbling I know :D I would so love to read Tony submitting to Charlie, and the submission costing him, but doing it anyway, and Charlie being loving and tender. All this, of course, in one of the gorgeous rooms. In the off season, so there was no rush, and they had time, and did not need to fear being discovered. Maybe an AU to the episode, Charlie taking care of Tony, telling him to sleep it off at the hotel, and then staying with him to make sure he's OK. And then, on waking up...

Imaginarycircus wrote an open letter to LJ regarding their belief that fandom wants to link to child porn...

In other news, am reading 'Clouds of Witness', and am about a third of the way through. I love how Sayers can write dialogue that lets you know what's happening without describing it. And I do adore Parker. Am having a bit of trouble picturing Peter's flat, however, as it is described as black and primrose, which seems an odd combination, and rather somber. The Dowager Duchess has just made an appearance and continues to be made of cool!

I am speculating on what happened in Corsica. It is hinted that Bunter enjoyed a flirtation with a local girl. I choose to read angst into this, in my efforts to characterize their relationship. Peter is in love with Bunter and vice versa, which usually I find a rather tedious and boring plot device, because it doesn't work in most 'modern' fandoms, where the two lovebirds have no reason to keep silent. However, I think here it would work, and work very well, seeing as Lord Peter would find it abhorrent to 'force himself' on Bunter, and would probably regard making any sort of first move as 'forcing'. His honor, and the rather feudal nature of their relationship, prevents him from speaking. Meanwhile Bunter won't make the first move because of the illegality and because he is very aware of the class difference, so he distracts himself with women. Neither, of course, have any idea how the other feels. Just musings at this point, and I need to finish reading the pre-Harriet books before I can really come up with anything solid. I just love the way Bunter is there, in the background, a strong yet gentle presence. And I must admit, I love the feudal power dynamics. Definitely one of my kinks, that.

I have uploaded the icons on my harddrive that I didn't have room for over on LJ, some of which I have missed more than I realized, such as the one I'm using here. I still have room for more than 80 new icons, though, and have been thinking up which fandoms I want represented, and which characters. Therefore, a list!

Icons I desire... )

If anyone feels like making me any of the above that would be brilliant, or if you've sekritly always wanted to make me an icon and have never got around to it, here is your opportunity! :D I would also be very grateful for any and all links to good icon communities etc. I tend to like pretty straightforward stuff, with or without text but if there is text it should be legible.

I have just changed by default icon from 'Visionary' to 'Totally Sane' by Carmarthen, which she made for me ages ago. I've been thinking of making the change for a while now, as it seems to suit me far more than 'Visionary', but absolutely couldn't resist changing it now that I've moved here. I am full of glee :D

Still need more icons though...

I have decided to move here. I've heard good things, and even just writing this it's like breathing free air after being cooped up inside for days. This post, where [info]squeaky makes a clear statement about IJ not being owned by LJ/SixApart, and then goes on to reply to customers questions and concerns using clear and concise language (I know, shocking, isn't it), has just really made me feel at home here. So, this is my last post on LJ, stating my reasons for moving. LJ has gotten too stifling. I'm keeping that account, don't get me wrong, but I won't post there anymore. I mean, who knows, one day I may be inspired to write underage Rodrigo/Raimundo ;D I don't spend a whole lot of time online, and I don't post to my journal with any degree of regularity, but that may change here, who knows. I like it here. It feels like the Gryffindor common room, which is a bit ridiculous since I've only recently arrived here (I set up this journal in May due to strikethrough'07), but that's how I feel.

In other news, I have been reading 'Whose Body?' by Dorothy Sayers, and I just adore her characters, especially the Dowager Duchess! She is made of win!!! And the absolute slashiness of it! I am convinced she was writing it that way on purpose. I mean, Bunter writes Lord Peter a love letter!!!

May I take this opportunity of expressing my grateful appreciation of your lordship's excellent taste in food, drink and dress? It is, if I may say so, more than a pleasure—it is an education, to valet and buttle your lordship.

His brother, sitting in the same room watching him read the letter, thinks that's what it is. I have googled and found no slash for this pairing though, unfortunately. Please tell me it exists? Everything seems to be Peter/Harriet, and as I haven't been introduced to her yet, as it were, I don't want to read it.

Also, I need more icons, including, I think, a new default icon.
